On my birthday, here is my favorite birthday story about reality and non-reality, from the life of the American mystic Robert Adams. An ancient story about two thorns, and the profound wisdom it contains... An ancient Vedantic story with profound insights... The bamboo tree doesn't break through the ground for the first four years. Then, in the fifth year, an amazing thing happens – the tree begins to grow at an astonishing rate. This is a wonderful metaphor for life. Yet, from the time we are born, we are encouraged to seek distance because that is all we see. Yet what matters more is what is happening under the surface. The strength and durability of the tree during the storms come from deep roots. It is the same for our lives during turbulent times. |
